The standard professional method involves removing all soft and decayed material, treating the remaining sound timber with an epoxy consolidant to harden and stabilise the fibres, and then rebuilding the lost section using a two-part epoxy filler or splicing in new dressed timber. When completed correctly and properly painted and sealed, the repaired section is typically stronger than the original timber and resistant to future rot. This approach is significantly more cost-effective than replacement and is the preferred method for heritage properties in Malvern, Toorak, and Brighton where original window profiles must be retained.

The most reliable indicator that water is entering through a window specifically is staining or dampness that appears on the internal wall directly adjacent to, above, or below the window frame during or immediately after rainfall. If the staining only appears after wind-driven rain from a particular direction, this often points to a failed sealant joint on the windward side of the frame. Other window-specific leak indicators include: bubbling paint on the internal window reveal, a damp or swelling timber sill on the inside, mould growth in the corner where the frame meets the plaster, and drips or water trails visible on the internal glazing bead during heavy rain.
